How to register your vehicle?

Step-by-step VEHICLE REGISTRATION
The owner of the vehicle takes the purchased vehicle (new or used) to an MOT test station (hereinafter: MOT station).

When registering the vehicle for the first time, in addition to the MOT test, the MOT station will also perform all administrative preparation work, complete the required vehicle documentation (registration card and certificate of title for the vehicle), and record the registration plate numbers in this documentation.

To enable the MOT station to perform all preparation work before the final registration of the vehicle, the owner must:
  • submit evidence of vehicle ownership (receipt, certified contract of sale, customs declaration, etc.);
  • pay all prescribed duties:
    • compulsory motor third party liability insurance policy,
    • annual road tax,
    • annual environment tax,
  • evidence of vehicle roadworthiness certified in the records on previous regular MOT test results (for the certification of roadworthiness, you need a valid homologation certificate)
  • personal ID card.

After all the activities performed at the MOT station have been completed, the owner of the vehicle is referred to the authorised police station with the completed documentation, where the entered data is inspected and certified, whereby the first registration of the vehicle is considered finalised.

The owner of the vehicle is then once again referred to the MOT station to collect their allocated registration plates upon submitting the vehicle documentation certified by the authorised police station.

NOTE:

If you have purchased a vehicle previously registered in the Republic of Croatia, but with an expired MOT, and the owner had unregistered it before the sale, the process of registration will be the same as with imported new or used vehicles, following all points of the above Instructions (excluding the import documentation).

If you have purchased a vehicle with a valid MOT, you need to exchange or obtain new vehicle documentation, by submitting evidence a) and d) of point 3 of the Instructions.
In this case, the entire registration process may be performed at an MOT station or an authorised police station.

  • The compulsory insurance policy, which is one of the prerequisites for vehicle registration, may be purchased:
    • at the MOT station performing the registration [if all legal requirements are satisfied] or
    • at any of the insurer's retail offices.
